Here are some examples of the way the Trust has helped carers in Dorset, and the kind of things the Trustees are happy to consider.

The Trust really wants to hear what will help YOU, so please let us know what would make a difference to you.

Jenny is a 72 year old lady who cares for her 92 year old mother, who has dementia and Parkinsons Disease. She receives some help from Social Services to care for her mother which includes 2 hours per week sitting service. However, this does not give Jenny enough time to go shopping or have any time to herself. We pay a local agency for a few hours’ additional sitting service, so that Jenny can have a few hours rest.

Angie and Bill care for their eleven year old daughter who has severe Cerebral Palsy, as well as their three other children. The family has not had a holiday for many years but they always want to include their disabled daughter in everything that the family does. We have paid for a suitably adapted holiday cottage in Wales, so that they can have a family holiday together.

Mr and Mrs Emerson are both in their early sixties. Mrs Emerson has multiple disabilities and illnesses. Her husband undertakes all her care needs as they prefer not to have outside help. They wished to have a break together and we have covered the cost of a caravan holiday in Cornwall, to give them a change of surroundings and a chance to relax. .

Annabelle is a 15 year old who gives much support, both physical and emotional, to her mother who has spinal problems and suffers from chronic asthma. She wanted to go on a school trip which although not very expensive, was beyond the family's means , and so we covered the cost. This was a very late request and it was very helpful that we were able to respond quickly.

Mrs Phillips Last year, Mrs Phillips and her husband, who has a degenerative muscular condition, took a week’s holiday in a chalet near the sea in the New Forest, for which we paid. This year, due to her poorer health, he is having a respite care break and we have agreed to pay for the cost of a caravan at Weymouth for Mrs Phillips and her sister, who will provide transport.

Brian is a 50 year old man who cares single-handedly for his son Mark, who has multiple disabilities. Brian wanted to keep fit, but he is only able to get out for short periods when a friend sits with Mark. We have paid for a year’s subscription to a Health Club, so that he can go and use the gym or have a swim at any time he can get away.

Penny has a stressful time caring for both her disabled husband, and elderly frail parents. A holiday is out of the question for her, but we have paid for her to go to Aromatherapy classes, which she finds relaxing, and especially enjoys the chance to mix with other people for a short time each week.
